I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the tap to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go straight to the main water shutoff valve for your home. If you are unable to find a water valve to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside the residence to depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that is sorted, give us a ring, no matter what the day or time is. We’ll be with you shortly to fix the leak.

While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any significant things close to the leak, and mop up any water or place a container to catch any drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

The toilet has its own tap behind the toilet bowl.
