I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn the water off at the nearest access point or at the mains valve outside. If you can’t locate the main isolation valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold taps inside and out to depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Now give our on call plumbers a ring, any hour of the day or night. We’ll be there as soon as possible to save the day.

While you are waiting, clear away any important items from the area, and mop up any water or position a container to catch any drips. If you have turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, many appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps as well.
