I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn the water off at the nearest access point and then at the mains tap outside. If you can’t find the water main shutoff valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on all the cold taps inside and out to depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

Now give our on call plumbers a ring, any hour of the day or night. We will be at your place as soon as possible to resolve the problem.

While waiting, remove any significant things from the area, and clean up any water or put a container to catch the drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, many appliances and fixtures have their own isolating valves also.
