I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn the water off at the nearest access point or at the mains valve outside. If you cannot find the main isolation valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on the cold taps inside and out to depressurise the household pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that’s sorted, give our plumber a call, no matter what the day or time is. We will be there shortly to get things sorted.

While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, clear away any significant possessions close to the leak, and clean up any water or place a bucket to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, switch off the hot water heating as well.
