I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

Many appliances and fixtures have taps that can be turned off. For example, the toilet will have an isolating valve below or beside the cistern. If you can’t find a valve, or that does not stop the leak, then turn off the mains water shutoff tap to stop all water to the property.

In the meantime, begin wiping up any water, place a container to catch any drips, and clear away important things from the area. If the house water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.
