I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

Many appliances and fixtures have isolating valves that you can turn off. For example, the toilet will have a valve below or beside the cistern. If you can’t locate a valve, or that doesn’t stop the leak, then turn off the mains shutoff valve to stop all water to your house.

Once that is done, give us a ring, no matter what the day or time is. We’ll be with you rapidly to resolve the problem.

While you wait for our plumber to arrive, start wiping up any water, position a container to catch drips, and remove valuable items from the area. If the property water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
