I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn off the water at the nearest access point or at the mains tap outside. If you cannot find the water main shutoff valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold taps inside and out to depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

In the meantime, begin mopping up any water, place a bucket to catch drips, and clear away valuable possessions from the affected area. If the mains water is turned off, also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
