I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn off the water at the nearest service valve or at the mains valve outside. If you cannot find the main valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on the cold taps inside and out to help depressurise the household pipework and minimise the leak.

Once you have stopped the diaster from growing, give our emergency plumber a call, any time of the day or night. We’ll be there rapidly to solve the problem.

While you are waiting, clear away any important things from the area, and mop up any water or place a container to catch the drips. If you have turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!
