I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is still water leaking, turn off the isolating valve to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go immediately to the main water valve for your property. While waiting, remove any important possessions close to the leak, and mop up any water or position a container to catch the drips. If you have turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.
