I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn off the water at the nearest access point and then at the mains valve outside. If you cannot locate the main isolation valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold taps inside and out to help depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that is done, give us a call, no matter what the day or time is. We’ll be there rapidly to fix the leak.

While waiting, clear away any significant items from the area, and clean up any water or put a bucket to catch any drips. If you turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
