I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

Many appliances and fixtures have service valves that can be turned off. For example, the toilet will have an isolating valve below or beside the cistern. If you can’t find a valve, or that doesn’t stop the leak, then turn off the mains water isolating tap to stop all water to the house.

Once that is done, give our plumber a ring, whatever the day or time is. We will be there shortly to resolve the problem.

While you are waiting, clear away any significant possessions close to the leak, and wipe up any water or position a bucket to catch any drips. If you turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, many appliances and fixtures have their own isolating valves as well.
