I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is still water leaking, turn off the service valve to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go straight to the main shutoff valve for your property. If you are unable to locate the tap to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside the residence to depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

While you wait for our plumber to arrive, start mopping up any water, place a bucket to catch drips, and remove valuable possessions from the area. If the mains water is turned off, also switch off the heating for the hot water.
