I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

A lot of appliances and fixtures have isolating valves that can be turned off. For example, the toilet will have an isolating valve below or beside the cistern. If you can’t locate a tap, or that does not stop the leak, then turn off the mains shutoff tap to stop all the water to your home.

Once that is sorted, give us a ring, no matter what the day or time is. We’ll be there shortly to get things sorted.

While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any important items close to the leak, and mop up any water or position a container to catch the drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
