I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

While you wait, begin mopping up any water, put a bucket to catch drips, and remove valuable items from the affected area. If the house water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.
