I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

Many appliances and fixtures have isolating valves that can be turned off. For example, the toilet will have a valve below or beside the cistern. If you cannot locate a valve, or that doesn’t stop the leak, then turn off the mains water shutoff tap to stop all water to your residence.

Once that is sorted, give our team a ring, whatever the day or time is. We will be with you rapidly to fix the leak.

While waiting for our emergency plumber to arrive, clear away any important items, mop up any water, and place a container to catch drips. You should also switch off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
