I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is still water leaking, turn off the tap to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go straight to the main valve for your property. If you are unable to find a main valve to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside the residence to depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

In the meantime, start wiping up any water, place a bucket to catch any drips, and clear away valuable items from the area. If the house water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
